A Game of You is the fifth volume of ten in Gaiman's Sandman series.Preceded by Season of Mist and followed by Fables and reflections.Collects issues #32-37180 pages of story plus ten or so of extras (foreword and intro, an afterword and a funny bio section on everyone involved) covers by Dave McKeanSecond Printing 1993 CanadaISBN 1-56389-093-3 (Hardcover)SKU S229689506I got a physical copy of this volume because its a difficult read. It's closely tied to the second volume The Doll's house. It's more about all these random characters in a once in a lifetime-type situation that is surreal, dream-like, bizarre and otherworldly. It feels very removed from the other stories in the series and from the Sandman world itself. Dream is in it very little and there is very little of the universe that was build in the previous and following books. It's a trip reading it on its own, it feels rich and lived in and it doesn't hold your hand. Every important character is a women even the endearing Wanda, a trans women (or simply a woman) and of course this book introduces us to the lesbian couple Hazel and Foxglove (Who have their own book with Death in the story The Time of Your Life ) and several talking animals. If you've never read Sandman or Gaiman this is a good place to startI thinks its a really great story to read on its own even, forgetting all the tides to Sandman and other Gaiman stories this is a really weird book! Even the introduction, foreword and afterword are incredibly bizarre and profound. They're worth a read; they invoke conspiracy theory-levels of thought about traditional folk games, childhood, memories, dreams, the influence of children's games and children's books like Alice's Adventure in Wonderland, made up world mythos, the rules children play by, how kids shape modern myth, culture and pop culture, history and eventually legend, find new uses for old technology and machines, the education system and the secret education of American children
