Players try to score the most points by constructing, demolishing, and rebuilding skyscrapers on the famous streets of New York City. On your turn, you will have a simple choice: would you rather acquire new land to build on, or knock down your existing buildings to make room for bigger and better ones? You will need to expand your territory and construct your buildings shrewdly if you want to rise to the top of the real estate moguls of New York 1901.

This is my current favorite board game! I love the mechanics of the game. I love the quality of the game. I love the way that it can be randomized with extra features once you learn the basic game. It is totally fun and easy (relatively) to learn. I played it with a couple of my relatives who had never played it and were apprehensive to learn another of my games once again. At the end though they were so happy that I taught them the game because it is so much fun! We've even played since. It is one of only a couple games that I bought knowing that I could play it for free at my Dad's house since he owned it first. Once I played with him I realized that I needed to own it too! I'm so glad that I bought it for myself! One of the main reasons I bought this was because I had heard this is a really fun two player game for the times that it was just two of us playing games that night. You block off one section to reduce the board size to make it into a two player game. It plays amazingly like this. It is one of the few games that I have found to be almost as much fun with just two players as it is with 3 or 4.One (good) note about the game designer/manufacturer; this is a Blue Orange game. I encouraged my Dad to buy this one day when Amazon had it on sale simply because of it being a Blue Orange game. They make some really fun and amazing games. My other younger audience/simpler favorite game is also theirs. It is called Battle Sheep Acquiring land, building on it, then demolishing to build something better is how this game works. Every time you build something you are earning points. There are three ages of time in 1901. The bronze age, the silver age and the golden age. They are tracked on the board. When you build a building you advance your scoring token. When you reach a certain amount of points on the scoring table you then enter a new age. Now you can build bigger buildings that earn you more points. You can also gain points by using the bonus point cards. For example you can earn extra points for building more buildings than your opponent in certain district. The game is very easy to learn, teach and has a simple scoring system. The game board is beautifully drawn and the art work on the character cards is great. The game moves quickly and turns consist of one of two actions. You either acquire land and build on it, or you demolish something you own and build something bigger. The buildings are all sturdy flat cardboard pieces. The shapes of the buildings remind me of tetris. The game can be strategically played or without. I mean you can still earn points for building stuff but if you plan out where you land grab then you can set yourself up for a major reward. For instance, if you grab enough land in a certain area you may be able to build one of the famous historically accurate buildings. These can net you a lot of points. The game takes about 30 mins or longer as most of these type games. It's a lot of fun and can be cutthroat.Try to be a skyscraper mogul and build the most prestigious buildings. On your turn you can claim a lot and place a worker and build a building by placing a building tile on that lot. The building tiles come in different sizes and shapes. Part of the game involves demolishing older buildings and replacing them with newer generation buildings. There are copper, silver and gold buildings. Gold buildings can't be demolished. Fun but not the best building game out there. This is a fun game. The game is well liked in my family. New York 1901 carries about the same complexity as Ticket To Ride (if you are familiar with Ticket To Ride). There are a few strategies to employ as you are building your empire, such as: upgrading your buildings "strategically", claiming land, shooting for bonus points / end game bonuses, building a legendary building, and blocking competitors. A lot is revealed in the end game and it is fun to see how the winner managed to succeed. The artwork is very nice. I purchased separately the Flatiron expansion and the painted figures expansion. There is also a Goons expansion that I think is rather difficult or expensive to get a hold of.Only down side to New York 1901 is that you can only have a maximum of 4 players in this game. We usually have 1-2 more people who want to play and they have to sit out.I would really like to see a larger board, maybe a new city board with a second city on the reverse side come out like what Ticket To Ride has done over the past few years. Newer boards might even be able to incorporate 1-2 additional players to up the total to 6 players. There are even possibilities to add water to the maps and different buildings like ports, train stations, etc... with even more end game bonuses.I think the developers are missing out on awesome expansion opportunities and growth for this game by not taking it a few steps further. Unfortunate. But in the meantime it is a fun game, just try not to think about all the awesome possibilities that remain untapped.Highly recommend this game for fans of Ticket To Ride, Carcassonne, etc....New York ist zwar in USA, dennoch ist mir völlig unerklärlich, warum die Spieleanleitung auf Englisch sein muss. Deshalb nur 1 Stern.Fun game to play, similar rules to "Ticket to Ride" where you collect cards in your hand to construct buildings.Excellent quality product. Bref une belle découverte .Great game
