A friend came up to visit and do some fishing, but it was raining so my friend asked if I wanted to fish in the rain or learn a new game. It's so much fun that I ended up buying several sets for my family members and now we have tournaments whenever we're together. Who knew? It turns out you can teach an old do new tricks!Love this game. On first look it is colorful and exciting! It looks simple enough but can get really competitive. You can use tactics to stop moves by other players. You can adjust the game to make the rules easier for young players. My 9 year old niece loved the game but we made it so that only Qwirkles were counted in order to not keep track of or add up lesser moves. I’m buying one more to send to my family cabin in the woods.Very clever design. This game is sort-of a cross between Scrabble and dominoes. It seems very simple, but there is actually a lot going on in it. You don't have to know English, or numbers; it works with colors and patterns. Kids as young as 8 have played it successfully. And its still very fun and challenging for adults. This game is fun. Younger players can add just a few tiles to play the game. Other players can add more tiles or challenge themselves to find places where they can score maximum points. We recently had a Family Game Night at our church. Qwerkle was a popular game played by children and adults -- including an adult with autism. We have also played Qwerkle at home with our children and grandchildren. It is easy to learn and relatively short. I would recommend this for various ages in a variety of situations. The games colors and shapes wore off. Called Mindgames company that sells game and they would not replace. This game is so fun.. and beautiful to look at!I bought this game for my eight year old grandson. I think he was not as impressed as I was.Let me preface this review by saying that I love the game itself, the mechanics of how the game plays. I have been playing Qwirkle with my family for a long time now. I decided to purchase another copy in the hopes that I can combine two sets, in order to play games with more than 4 players (I have played games with one set and 5 players but, it doesn't work very well in terms of the flow of the game and total number of tiles split 5 ways). The tiles in my old qwirkle set are well made, the bag that is provided to put the tiles in feels high quality and they've held up well in the time that I've had it. Okay, with that preface out of the way I will share my gripes with this latest set.It seems like with this latest version there has been a change in the manufacturing process for this game. First of all, the bag that is provided for the tiles now sports a logo on it and feels like a cheap, thin material as opposed to the previous quality bag which was thick and logo free. As you will see from my pictures there are several dissapointing aspects to these tiles. I hope for everyone else's sake that this is a anomaly and that in general other sets have no issues with their tiles; I can only share my experience, unfortunately.I've numbered some issues I've had which the pictures illustrate.1. The paint on the front of many tiles is chipped, to varying degrees of depth and number of chips, illustrated on the two green tiles shown in the pictures.2. The paint on the tiles is thin. You can see the black tile through the paint, illustrated by the yellow tile in the pictures.3. The centering of the printing or painting is off on some of the tiles. In the purple tile picture you can see that the edge of the shape is almost off the front face of the tile, going down the side.4. Several of the tiles are dented to some degree, some are even damaged to the extent of exposing unpainted wood underneath.I'll end this review on a positive note:1. The bag is bigger. My old version has a bag that is barely big enough to hold all of the tiles. This new bag better holds the tiles, with more room to allow for rummaging through the tiles to ensure a random tile is picked.2. There's no hole in the front of the box. The old box has/had a hole in the front of the box which displayed the wooden tiles. This new version has no hole which is much more pleasing.Overall the gameplay itself is fantastic. It's a great gateway game and it's easy to learn but there's a lot of depth to it once you get into it. I just hope that nobody else receives such poor tiles as I have in this latest set.I read lots of reviews before buying this at Christmas, very pleased with choice.Perfect for reluctant reader but competitive foster kids and partially sighted husband, we can all play this. It's a mixture of scrabble and dominos(ish). Be careful if you look for a"how to play"clip on you-tube, the one we found was very good, but wasn't suitable for the children to listen to!!Didn't really work well with two players. As a guide, 2 adults and 3 children, we reckon 1 hour for a game, the scores usually are quite close so there's never a winner with a ridiculous number of points. No breakable pieces (which is very important in this house). I recommend this (the kids are between 6 and 10)Yes it’s a great game for all ages, especially if you like scrabble type placing of tiles. My only gripe is the build quality. The tiles are painted black then the shapes are painted on top. As a result the colours are not as vivid as they could be. Orange and red are quite similar unless you have good lighting and/or eyesight.A major omission is tile racks. When the tiles are placed vertically and it is hard to see the colours in low lighting or if you have poor eyesight. I made my own and it helped tremendously. At a pinch you can use scrabble tile holders but they are slightly too small.I was recommended this game by a friend and wanted to give it to my boyfriend's two daughters aged 10 and 12 who love playing board games. We all played it together and had such fun with it. It seems very simple - and it is - but there is a degree of craft and strategy involved if you are to maximise your point score when placing your tiles and if you are to try and block the other players from making a Quirkle before it is your next go. We spent an hour playing the first game but the following games were a lot quicker, probably about 40-45 minutes. It definitely brings out the competitive streak whilst at the same being a lot of fun. Because you are not counting just one point for each tile placed, but one point for your tiles placed PLUS the number of tiles in the line you have just added your tile(s) to, you have to keep score throughout your go so quite good for your mental agility and obviously a good exercise for younger children. It would be great for the whole family or group of friends, particularly with a glass or two involved! This is a modern classic. The starting premise is quite simple, you can match colour or shape, not both. You may not repeat a colour if you are matching colours, and you cannot repeat a shape if you are matching shapes. You can form strings of up to 6 tiles and not more, since you have exactly 6 shapes in 6 possible colours. This game grows with you, it has elements of strategy as well as elements of luck and it is easy to teach and get down to playing. I highly recommend it for family gatherings or the occasional "games nights" with friends as it does not take all that long to play and everyone will get right down to playing it in no time.
